Depending on the knife steel and condition, we complete the majority of the bevel setting on a Tormek T8 or the German equivalent utilising stone and diamond wheels ranging in grit from 80 to 4000.
We also use custom made belt sanders modified for sharpening. Installing a sewing machine motor gives complete control over the machine, allowing it to be perfectly matched to the sharpening job. Useful for repairs.
Burr removal and stropping are both part of the finishing step but have two very different outcomes. The Burr created by sharpening is removed by using a fine grit stone or leather wheel.
Honing involves a leather strop, or a wool felt wheel, best results are achieved when either method employs 3-micron diamond spray. Honing better refines and aligns the blade edge after the burr is removed.
